Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Fall 2021
Feedback is essential for knowledge acquisition, but there is a paucity of automated feedback generation frameworks in intelligent tutoring systems (ITSs) that facilitate and scaffold students’ learning across domains. This study introduces a novel framework for generating templated-based...

Automated Item Generation by Combining the Non-template and Template-based Approaches to Generate Reading Inference Test Items
DownloadSpring 2021
Automatic item generation (AIG) is an area of research, where cognitive and psychometric modeling practices are used to create test items with the aid of computer technology. AIG can produce a large number of test items to support the surging demand for test administration. Two general methods...

Automatic Detection of Underground Objects in Ground Penetrating Radar Images using Machine Learning
DownloadFall 2021
The population increase has stimulated the need for the creation and expansion of existing urban infrastructures such as sewer, water, power and telecommunication lines. In order to support this need, multiple efforts to find sustainable solutions that support the urbanization trend have been...

Spring 2021
Most multicellular organisms solve the problem of long-distance transport of water, signals and nutrients by means of networks of cells and tissues such as the vascular systems of plants and animals. What controls the formation of vascular systems is thus a key question in biology. In animals,...

Axonal excitability as a biomarker for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: a systematic review and meta-analysis
DownloadFall 2021
Background: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), like many neurodegenerative conditions, lacks definitive biomarkers for disease diagnosis, prognosis, staging and measurement of response to therapy. The Nerve Excitability Test (NET) is a suite of electrophysiological measurements that generates...

A classic result in the field of Riemannian Geometry is the Splitting Theorem of Cheeger and Gromoll. Since this result there have been numerous alternate versions under a variety of different conditions. Continuing in this vein, we prove structure results on manifolds with boundary components...

Fall 2021
The demand for large dataset and demand of privacy protection are in constantly conflicts as the balance between the two is hard to keep. Differential privacy is a mathematical rigor definition that provides the balance bewteen these two opposite sides. It's developed with the purpose of making...

Bayesian Nonlinear Finite Element Model Updating of Bridge Columns considering Bond-slip and Rebar Buckling using Experimental and Simulated Data
DownloadSpring 2021
Reinforced concrete (RC) bridges are key elements in modern transportation system. Therefore, the serviceability and safety of such structures after earthquakes have become an area of great interest. Developing an accurate FE model that is capable of representing the important mechanics of RC...

Fall 2021
Kernel methods are often used for nonlinear regression and classification in machine learning because they are computationally cheap and accurate. Fourier basis and wavelet basis are the bases that can efficiently approximate the kernel functions. In previous research, Bayesian approximate kernel...
