This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Data analysis for the classification of gas-liquid and liquid-solid (slurry) flows using digital signal processing
DownloadSpring 2013
The Canadian oil sand industry operates three phase gas-liquid-solid hydrotransport pipelines to transport oil sand ore from mines to processing facilities. This hydrotransport process is critical to downstream separation activities, given the conditioning steps that occur within it: (i) lump...

Spring 2011
One of heavy oils upgrading processes is hydroconversion. As it is a complex process involving many chemical reactions, the mathematical model of hydroconversion process often has more kinetic parameters than can be estimated from the data. In this thesis, a model for hydroconversion processing...

Non-linear reparameterization of complex models with applications to a microalgal heterotrophic fed-batch bioreactor
DownloadSpring 2010
Good process control is often critical for the economic viability of large-scale production of several commercial products. In this work, the production of biodiesel from microalgae is investigated. Successful implementation of a model-based control strategy requires the identification of a model...

Fall 2011
Optimization techniques, in conjunction with a finite element thermal model, are used in this thesis to optimize the temperature profile (i.e. cooling rate and coiling temperature) of a steel skelp during laminar cooling. Optimization parameters include skelp velocity, laminar cooling bank...

Spring 2012
Nadadoor Srinivasan, Venkat R.
Biological engineering is a domain of study that involves applying known engineering principles to biological systems. Qualitative studies in the field of biology have undergone tremendous advancements in the last two decades but quantitation is still in its early stages due to various...
