This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Duration of labour and its impact on the infant gut microbial composition in the Canadian Healthy Infant Longitudinal Development (CHILD) birth cohort
DownloadSpring 2018
Background: Balanced development of infant gut microbiota is pivotal for immune maturation and energy homeostasis, and infant gut dysbiosis is associated with increased risk of childhood atopy, allergy and excess weight gain. Shifts in abundance of gut Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes during infancy,...

Effects of Dose and Parenteral Lipid Composition on Liver Function in Neonatal Piglets on Total Parenteral Nutrition
DownloadSpring 2014
Both parenteral lipid dose and fatty acid (FA) composition have been proposed as risk factors for neonatal intestinal failure associated liver disease (IFALD). This research compared conventional lipid (Intralipid®, n-6FA), dosed both high (10 g/kg/d) and low (5 g/kg/d), to fish oil (Omegaven®,...

Fall 2010
The endoplasmic reticulum is responsible for folding of newly synthesized proteins. Chaperone proteins, calreticulin and calnexin, with the thiol-oxidoreductase ERp57, interact with nascent proteins in a cycle of quality control to ensure proteins are folded correctly. In this study, we...

Endothelial Colony Forming Cells: Role in Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia and evaluation of new therapeutic strategies
DownloadFall 2013
Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), a chronic lung disease of prematurity, results in alveolar simplification and respiratory distress in the newborn. Vascular component is implicated. Lung damage involves a deficiency in the number and function of progenitor cells. We hypothesize that endothelial...

Engagement of children and parents in developing outcome measures and determining minimal important difference: focus on probiotics and antibiotic-associated diarrhea
DownloadFall 2022
Introduction Patient engagement as a major component of patient-oriented research (POR) emphasizes that patients should be engaged not only as participants, but also as research partners. Having patient perspectives to inform the content and relevance of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs)...

Enrollment in Multidisciplinary Clinical Care for Pediatric Weight Management: Predictors, Reasons, Facilitators, and Recommendations
DownloadFall 2017
Background: One-third of Canadian children meet the criteria for overweight or obesity. While multidisciplinary clinical care (MCC) can be effective to manage pediatric obesity, many eligible children are not referred to this level of care and many of those who are referred do not enroll in...

Enteral diet and necrotizing enterocolitis in neonates: a scoping review and parent outcome prioritization project
DownloadFall 2017
Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a potentially life-threatening inflammatory disease of the gut affecting newborns, especially preterm infants. This complex disease is affected by numerous risk factors including genetics, intestinal microbiota, immune system responses, cardiac or respiratory...

Epithelial and vascular progenitors in the developing lung: Newer insights and therapeutic implications
DownloadFall 2012
Stanislaus Alphonse, Anthuvan Rajesh
Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) are life-threatening lung diseases affecting newborn infants. Both diseases are characterized by impaired lung development and are currently untreatable. Dysregulation in the number or function of lung progenitor cells is...

Evaluation of fecal microbial transplant as a treatment method for disruption of the gut microbiota associated with short bowel syndrome in neonates.
DownloadFall 2021
Background Short bowel syndrome (SBS) is the leading cause of intestinal failure (IF), wherein either the function of the intestines is suboptimal, or length has been reduced due to congenital or acquired conditions, such that parenteral nutrition (PN) is required for >6 weeks. The most common...

Evolution of Left ventricular Function and Its Tolerance of Tachycardia in Early Infancy: a Simultaneous Invasive and Noninvasive Assessment in Neonatal and Young Infant Piglets
DownloadSpring 2016
Background: The literature examining ventricular function of the neonate and young infant is fragmented. Furthermore, the clinical implications of the observed differences have been largely extrapolated from adult studies. Clinical echocardiography-based investigations at rest, for instance, have...
