This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

ULF Waves in the Magnetosphere and their Association with Magnetopause Instabilities and Oscillations
DownloadFall 2012
This thesis addresses the question of excitation of ULF waves by magnetopause instabilities and oscillations. Given proper spacecraft orientations and near magnetopause encounters, the CLUSTER spacecraft mission is used to resolve the space-time ambiguity inherent in a single spacecraft...

Ultra Low Frequency Waves and their Association with Magnetic Substorms and Expansion Phase Onset
DownloadFall 2009
This thesis concerns the study of Ultra Low Frequency (ULF) waves during magnetospheric substorms. A wavelet algorithm which characterises magnetic ULF waves during substorm onset is presented. The algorithm is validated by comparing the spatial and temporal location of ULF wave onset to...

Fall 2017
Ultrafast terahertz (THz) microscopy is an emerging field of research that leverages the imaging of picosecond electric field transients to explore free carrier responses from a near-field perspective. This thesis presents the first effort made to use an electro-optic imaging system to probe the...
-
Fall 2013
The main purpose of this thesis is to develop terahertz (THz) generation, detection, and spectroscopy techniques via ultrafast imaging methods. Sampling THz pulse waveforms with anoncollinear imaging technique was carried out. Full-field images of the THz electric field waveforms sampled in...

Fall 2019
Narreto, Mary Alvean Balmadres
In this thesis, the ultrafast photoluminescence and photoconductivity dynamics of different types of semiconductors are investigated. Using time-resolved photoluminescence and time-resolved terahertz spectroscopy techniques, the origin of the light emission and the nature of carrier transport are...

Fall 2015
Ultrafast carrier dynamics in silicon nanocrystals (Si NCs) is explored using time-integrated photoluminescence, time-resolved photoluminescence and pump-probe transient absorption spectroscopies. The role of surface oxygen in the optical emission dynamics of dodecyl functionalized Si NCs is...
