This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Manufacturing and characterization of blended PVDF/PVDF-TrFE polymers: a study towards future sensor applications
DownloadSpring 2022
Poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and its copolymers received increasing attention due to their electroactive properties and lower processing cost in comparison to the conventional piezoelectric ceramic materials, which are widely used in electronics, energy harvesting, biochemistry, and sensor...

Spring 2019
Extrusion-Based Additive Manufacturing (EBAM), also known as Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) or three-dimensional (3D) printing, is a manufacturing technique in which a desired object is formed by repetitive process of extrusion and deposition of thin layers of molten material through a nozzle in...

Fall 2018
Naturally derived or “green” based materials are increasing in demand for use as reinforcement and matrix materials in composites. However, it is still relatively unknown how well these materials can perform as constituents in tubular braided composite materials. In this work, tubular braided...

Shape Memory Polymers and Their Composites: Towards Field Applications via Production, Characterization and Modelling
DownloadSpring 2021
Garces Arguello, Irina Tatiana
Shape Memory Polymers (SMP) and Shape Memory Polymer Composites (SMPCs) can be used in field applications to replace mechanical actuators. They offer lightweight, ease of part manufacturing, reduced energy losses due to elimination of friction between components and a wide range of mobility. The...

Sub-unit Cell Modeling and Manufacturing of Non-Orthogonal Three-Dimensional Braided Structures
DownloadSpring 2021
Three-dimensional (3D) braiding is commonly considered an advantageous method for producing near-net composites that provide improved transverse properties relative to two-dimensional (2D) braiding. Modeling of 3D braids is an ever-growing field of research – particularly the use of sub-unit cell...

Towards Realizing Melt-electrospun Bone Scaffolds: Theoretical Modeling and Simulation of Melt-Electrospinning as a Multi-body System
DownloadFall 2023
There has been a growing interest in integrating melt-electrospinning (MES) with three-dimensional (3D) fabrication methods to produce constructs with controlled internal micro-architectures. One application area that could benefit from this integration is bone tissue engineering (TE). Due to the...

Fall 2020
In this thesis, the challenges involved with large-scale Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) 3-dimensional (3D) printing is explored through an industrial application in which a cantilever chair is produced as a case study. The chair is designed in SOLIDWORKS® in which easy variability and complex...

Fall 2015
Steel has traditionally been used as the material of choice for concrete reinforcement, due in part to its combination of high strength, stiffness, and ductility. However, steel rebar is susceptible to corrosion when exposed to moisture and salts, which can lead to delamination between the steel...
