This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Development of a Novel Oral Drug Delivery System Using pH-Responsive Hollow Microparticle with Macropores on the Surface
DownloadFall 2017
Oral administration of drugs is considered advantageous over all other routes of drug delivery due to several benefits, including painless self-administration, lack of biohazardous waste, and easier and cold-chain free transportation. However, numerous environment sensitive drugs such as vaccines...

Spring 2017
During the past several decades, the relationship between microstructure and mechanical properties of high strength microalloyed steels has been extensively studied in an effort to improve the fracture toughness and strength of these types of steels, without appreciably increasing steel...

Fall 2022
The application of dissolvable materials is becoming widely used in hydraulic fracturing, especially in low permeability reservoirs. To date, most of the DAs are based on Al alloys (AAs) or Mg alloys, which offer desirable dissolvability, yet limited mechanical properties. This work aims to...

Development of an Electronic Nose for Detection of Volatile Organic Compounds Based on Nanoporous Microcantilevers by Using Photothermal Spectroscopy
DownloadSpring 2015
An electronic nose for identification and quantification of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) mixtures was developed using a nanopore-enhanced photothermal cantilever deflection spectroscopy (PCDS). PCDS provides highly selective detection of vapor mixtures of VOCs from specific molecular...
-
Development of dynamic column breakthrough for multicomponent adsorption equilibrium and diffusion
DownloadFall 2022
Pressure and temperature swing adsorption processes are increasingly being designed and optimized computationally. The reliability of these predictions are highly dependent on the quality of the experimental equilibrium and kinetic data used in these simulations. Consistent experimental...

Development of effective green lubricants for industrial drilling systems in aggressive environments
DownloadSpring 2024
In drilling systems used in the oil and gas industry, drilling equipment often encounters critical problems which could result in irreparable damage to metallic equipment. Chemical and physical interactions at the contact between different parts, such as drill bits, drill strings with well walls...

Spring 2015
Flexible electrode arrays are a crucial technology for neural interfaces. In this thesis, the continued development of a flexible based electrode array is discussed. Two types of strain relief are introduced into the leads to allow the base to deform like the spinal cord in a repeatable manner....

Development of Functional Polyelectrolyte Coatings with Antifouling & Lubricating Applications in Bioengineering and Study of the Associated Surface Interaction Mechanisms
DownloadSpring 2018
The fabrication of functional polyelectrolyte coatings by employing reliable anchoring mechanisms has attracted great attention due to their wide range of potential applications. In this thesis, we develop robust-anchored functional coatings, especially polyelectrolyte coatings, for endowing the...

Spring 2024
Scarce and expensive iridium, known for its high activity and corrosion resistance, is the most used catalyst for acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER); however, reduc- ing its use by enhancing catalyst performance and utilization is vital for advancing proton exchange membrane water...

Development of multiscale microbial kinetic-transport models for prediction and optimization of biogenic coalbed methane production
DownloadFall 2015
The fundamental objective of this research project is to develop an enzymatic reaction kinetic model for coal bioconversion which, on integration with multiscale transport models, would allow simulation and optimization of field scale biogenic coalbed methane production. Biogenic coalbed methane...
