This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Finite Element-based Parametric and Probabilistic Analysis of Structural Deterioration in Corroded Pre-stressed Concrete Girders
DownloadFall 2020
Deterioration of concrete structures caused by corrosion have caused worldwide concerns especially for pre-stressed concrete (PC) structures because of their extensive use in important infrastructure, such as highway bridges. PC girders that have been in service for a long time in natural...

Finite Element-based Stress Intensity Factor Estimation for Fatigue Crack Growth Simulation and Stochastic Filtering-based Fatigue Crack Growth Prediction of Pipelines
DownloadSpring 2022
Fatigue cracking is one of the major integrity threats to oil and gas pipelines. Having a reliable trajectory of fatigue crack growth once detected is very crucial for decision making regarding integrity threat management. In-line Inspection (ILI) tools, and other non-destructive methods are used...

Flexural and Shear Response of Deteriorated Prestressed Concrete Girders Taken from a Decommissioned Bridge in Alberta
DownloadFall 2021
Prestressed concrete (PC) bridges are a major component of North America’s transportation network. As this network ages, the response of deteriorated PC bridge girders is of interest since rehabilitation and repairs are constrained by limited infrastructure budgets. Bridges are often evaluated...

Spring 2017
Operations with drilling fluids require multiple performance requirements. Among those, fluid loss issue is a very severe problem that is encountered in many drilling operations. Rheological and transport properties of drilling muds in porous media control the fluid loss behavior in reservoir...

Fall 2013
Increasingly, human activities for the societal development and quality of life can alter, disrupt or destroy aquatic habitat with varying degrees. The rising awareness and concern regarding such type of human activities on stream and riverine ecosystem have resulted in a movement towards habitat...

Flowback Data Analysis for Evaluating Multi-fractured Horizontal Wells Completed in Unconventional Reservoirs
DownloadSpring 2019
This work aims at characterizing fracture network and evaluating multi-fractured horizontal wells completed in unconventional reservoirs through flowback data analysis. A primary focus of this work is to estimate effective fracture pore-volume using flowback rate and pressure data. This work also...

Fall 2014
Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) is one of the most rapidly growing technologies for utility installation under surface obstacles. The rapid growth in application of HDD has not accompanied the same level of development in engineering design procedures and efficient drilling techniques....
