This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

An Experimental and Numerical Study on Complex Behaviour of Cement Paste under SAGD Operating Conditions
DownloadSpring 2020
During the exploration stage for oil sands mining or in situ thermal projects, many wells are drilled to recover core for resource assessment: these wells are referred to as stratigraphic wells. These stratigraphic wells are subsequently plugged with either thermal or non-thermal quality cement...

Design, Deployment, Performance and Assessment of Downhole and Near Surface Monitoring Technology for Geological CO2 Storage
DownloadSpring 2012
Early carbon storage research and development efforts in Canada and elsewhere began with “value-added” projects such as CO2-enhanced oil recovery or CO2 enhanced coalbed methane, where the increase in production helps to offset the costs of CO2 and of its potential long-term storage. These...

Effects of Triaxial Stress and Strain on Multiphase Flow in 3D-Printed Fractured Reservoir Rock Analogues
DownloadFall 2024
The oil and gas industry, fundamental to the global energy economy, faces an ever-increasing quest for new reserves to meet growing demand. Hydrocarbon reservoirs, dynamic systems by nature, undergo significant changes throughout their lifecycle, particularly due to deformation from effective...
-
Evaluating the Behaviour of Rock Discontinuities in Direct Shear Under Constant Normal Load and Constant Normal Stiffness Boundary Conditions Using Additive Manufacturing Technology
DownloadFall 2021
The inherent heterogeneity of natural rock and the variance in the surface roughness of discontinuities limit the repeatability of rock joint sampling and testing. One way to overcome this challenge is by using additive manufacturing (AM) techniques. AM, also referred to as 3D printing, has shown...

Spring 2020
An effective Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) process requires thermal and hydraulic communication to be established between the injection and the production wells during the start-up operation. To achieve inter-well communication, the conventional steam circulation start-up operations...
-
Spring 2022
Time-lapse seismic reservoir monitoring has advanced quickly over the past decade to become a common technique for monitoring subsurface processes, especially for steam and CO2 injection. It has been widely used to determine and monitor changes occurring in a reservoir during hydrocarbon...
-
Spring 2016
The Joslyn steam release incident in 2006 has significantly influenced the approval process for steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) projects, which now require rigorous caprock integrity assessment to be conducted. In the past, most of the research efforts have been devoted to reservoir...
-
Fall 2009
A common challenge during deposition of slurries is segregation as large particles settle through the matrix of fines and water. Whether segregation occurs or not depends on the grain size distribution of the solids, the void ratio or solids content and the rheological properties of the...
-
Fall 2020
The Clearwater Formation is a stratigraphic unit of Early Cretaceous (Albian) age that is a laterally continuous unit consisting largely of shale with a minor component of interbedded siltstone or sandstone. Throughout its geological history, the depositional environment of this formation was...

Geomechanical Controls on Multiphase Fluid Flow in Naturally Fractured Carbonate Reservoirs
DownloadSpring 2020
Carbonate formations host 50% of the world’s oil and gas reserves and a major portion of the world’s groundwater resources. Additionally, 85% of carbonate reservoirs are naturally fractured. Porous rock matrix and fractures in carbonate formations can be greatly influenced by the effective...
