This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Development of Mussel-inspired Antifouling Coatings and Underwater Adhesive Materials and the Associated Surface Interaction Mechanisms
DownloadFall 2022
Nature biology like blue mussels, barnacles, and sandcastles can tightly attach to solid surfaces in the ocean, even under dynamic and turbulent environments. Exploration of these organisms has revealed the significance of catechol-enriched adhesive proteins as the unique paradigm for the...

Development of naphthalene diimide-based n-type small-molecule organic mixed ionic-electronic conductor for the Organic electrochemical transistor
DownloadSpring 2024
Organic semiconductors have become increasingly recognized for their inherent mechanical flexibility, tunable electronic properties, and solution processability. These offer an unprecedented advantage over their inorganic counterparts for the cost-effective and scalable manufacture of organic...

Fall 2024
Transition metal carbide catalysts (TMCs), particularly Molybdenum carbide (Mo2C), have emerged as a cost-effective and promising alternative to precious-metal-based catalysts (Pt, Ru) for the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of biomass-derived species, including bio-oil. However, low selectivity towards...

Development of Oral Influenza Vaccine Delivery System Utilizing pH Responsive Pored Microparticles
DownloadFall 2015
Influenza is a major respiratory disease caused by influenza virus. Recent spread of the extremely pathogenic avian and swine influenza viruses paint a morbid picture of the emergence of a more lethal influenza virus in future. Currently, hypodermic needles are being dominantly employed in...

Development of Prediction Tools for Improved Wear Assessment of Pipelines and Complex Geometries
DownloadSpring 2021
Particle-laden flows such as pneumatic conveying or slurry transport are common in the minerals processing and oil sands industries. These industries face the challenge of erosion wear due to the repeated impact of the entrained particles, and subsequent damage to pipelines and equipment. Many...

Development of Processing Strategies to Enhance the Efficiency of the Growth of the Gammaproteobacterial Methanotroph Methylomicrobium album BG8
DownloadSpring 2021
Methanotrophic bacteria can use different one-carbon compounds, including methane and methanol, two common industrial waste byproducts, as their main source of carbon and energy. Interestingly, they can convert these compounds into value-added products such as biofuels and bioplastics. Methanol...

Development of specified risk material-based plywood adhesive with enhanced water resistivity
DownloadFall 2016
Canadian plywood industry with its 2 billion square feet annual capacity [83] requires a large amount of adhesive materials to satisfy its needs. This forces plywood manufacturers to consider the utilization of agricultural bio-waste to create environmentally friendly adhesive materials with the...

Development of Surrogate Spinal Cords for the Evaluation of Electrode Arrays Used in Intraspinal Implants
DownloadSpring 2012
A surrogate spinal cord was developed to test the mechanical stability of electrode arrays for intraspinal implants. The mechanical and surface properties of candidate materials were tested. The elastic modulus was characterized using dynamic mechanical analysis. Forces required to indent the...

Fall 2014
In the upgrading of heavy feeds, it is essential to avoid the onset formation of mesophase, which is considered a precursor for coke formation. The formation of this aromatic dense phase leads to serious problems such as catalyst deactivation, limiting the vacuum residue conversion, and fouling...
