Investigation of fatty acid and cholesterol synthesis using stable isotopes in type 1 diabetes, liver failure, islet and liver transplant, and effect of dietary intervention
DownloadSpring 2011
Elevated plasma lipids are risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD). In certain conditions plasma lipids are normal yet individuals experience increased morbidity. Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is associated with elevated CVD despite normal lipids, while in liver failure low plasma lipids may...

Investigation of host mechanisms associated with Escherichia coli O157:H7 super-shedding in beef steers
DownloadFall 2017
Cattle shedding > 104 CFU E. coli O157/gram of feces are defined as super-shedder (SS) which are a major disseminator of this foodborne pathogen into the environment. The recto-anal junction (RAJ) has been identified as the primary colonization site of E. coli O157within the gastrointestinal...

Spring 2019
Synthetic oligodeoxynucleotides containing unmethylated CpG motifs (CpG ODNs) are powerful stimulators of innate and adaptive immune responses, exerting their activity through the interaction with endolysosomal Toll-like receptor 9 (TLR9) expressed by antigen presenting cells (APCs). The strong...

Fall 2013
This thesis research was aimed to develop a residual feed intake (RFI) prediction equation in dairy cattle while accounting for the animals’ multifunctional lactation non-linear energy requirements profiles. The possibility of shortening RFI test period and finding indicator traits for RFI...

Investigation on the uptake of functional proteins and infectious prions into wheat plants through the root system
DownloadSpring 2014
Prions are the proteinaceous particle responsible for infections in a class of neurodegenerative diseases. These diseases affect a number of mammals including cervids where it is termed Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD). Prions enter the environment and persist for years. Plants have the ability to...

Involvement of Gibberellin in growth and carbohydrate partitioning in developing pea (Pisum sativum L.) seeds
DownloadSpring 2016
Gibberellins (GAs) are an important class of diterpenoid plant hormones that control various aspects of plant development including seed growth and development. The involvement of GAs during pea (Pisum sativum) seed development was studied by comparing GA deficient mutants; lh-2, lh-1, le-3, ls-1...

Isolation and fast analysis of phytochemical constituents in Echinacea species and Rhodiola rosea L. using high-speed counter-current chromatography and ultra fast liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry
DownloadFall 2011
High-speed counter-current chromatography was used for the purification of phytochemical components from the roots of Echinacea angustifolia (DC.) Hell and Rhodiola rosea L. Five alkylamides were purified from Echinacea angustifolia roots using two solvent systems and seven phenylalkanoid and...
