This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Fall 2011
Consumer acceptance of meat depends on its colour and there is a negative bias in North America for broiler dark meat. Freezing and cooking leads to changes in meat characteristics and colour of broiler chicken thighs. The first experiment focused on the effect of freezing and cooking on broiler...

Fall 2012
The study aim was to compare the impact of corticosteroid-free and corticosteroid-containing immunosuppressive regimes on parameters of bone health and growth in children post-liver transplant (LTX). One-hundred fifteen charts were screened, thirty-nine charts meeting study inclusion were...

Effects of macrophages and noggin suppression on the BMP-2-induced osteogenesis of human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells
DownloadSpring 2011
The osteogenic effects of bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) on human mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are less profound than expected as compared with rodent cells, and supraphysiological dose of BMP-2 is required to achieve desired clinical outcome. The mechanism for this phenomenon is unclear....

Microbial biodeterioration of human skeletal material from Tell Leilan, Syria (2900 – 1900 BCE)
DownloadSpring 2011
Human bone is considered one of the most direct and insightful sources of information on peoples of the past. As a result, curation protocols have been developed to ensure that the integrity of human skeletal collections is maintained. Although collections are generally considered safe when these...

Fall 2022
Phosphate is important for a variety of physiological functions, including the composition of bone via formation of the calcium-phosphate salt hydroxyapatite. Given that bone mineralization occurs very rapidly early in life, young mammals require high phosphate absorption to establish and...

Non-viral Gene Delivery of BMP-2 Plasmid from Collagen Based Scaffolds for Bone Regeneration Therapy
DownloadSpring 2021
Significant progress in the field of bone regeneration therapy has been achieved in the last two decades. While regeneration therapies with autogenous, allografts and exogenous grafts are remaining the preferred treatments, the outcomes remained are usually sub-optimal. Gene therapy holds a great...

Phosvitin Extraction from Egg Yolk and Its Potential as a Functional Food Ingredient for Improving Bone Health
DownloadSpring 2019
Osteoporosis is a common disease afflicting a quarter of the population of 50 years old and above worldwide. The osteoporotic fracture brings great pain/inconvenience to the patients, and sometimes causes immobility or even mortality. Drugs are available for treating osteoporosis but are...

Preservation of Tissue Structures in Late Cretaceous Vertebrate Remains from Alberta, Canada
DownloadFall 2020
Here I investigate the rates of preserved original organic tissue and their quality within vertebrate bones that were preserved during the late Cretaceous of Alberta. Specimens recovered from the Dinosaur Park Formation provide a baseline for comparison to four other Alberta Formations (Brazeau,...

Tooth-anchored vs. bone-anchored maxillary expansion: a randomized controlled trial comparing dental and skeletal effects
DownloadFall 2010
Aim: To investigate the differences, if any, between tooth-anchored maxillary expansion (TME) and bone-anchored maxillary expansion (BME) in terms of the produced longitudinal dentoskeletal changes -and the stability of these changes- in adolescents with maxillary constriction. Methods: ...
