This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Plasma Citrulline Utility and Arginine Synthesis in a Neonatal Short Bowel Syndrome piglet model
DownloadFall 2018
Premature infants are at increased risk of short bowel syndrome (SBS), which leads to dependence on parenteral nutrition (PN). While lifesaving, PN support has multiple complications, such as increased risk of sepsis and liver disease. Autonomy from PN is dependent on adaptation of the remnant...

Pre and postnatal maternal distress and infant gut immunity in the Canadian Healthy Infant Longitudinal Development (CHILD) birth cohort
DownloadSpring 2017
Introduction: Secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA) plays a critical role in gut mucosal immunity and is a marker of immune maturation in early life. Delayed IgA production is associated with increased risk of allergic diseases. Animal models of stressful events before birth and during infancy show...

Fall 2020
Background Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) continues to be a major public health issue globally. An estimated 150,000 infants are infected annually through vertical transmission (VT). The prevention of vertical transmission of HIV can be mitigated through HIV screening in pregnancy; however,...

Procedural pain in children: A qualitative study of caregiver experiences and information needs
DownloadFall 2016
Background: Procedural pain is the unpleasant sensory and emotional experience children endure when undergoing a medically situated intervention that may cause pain, anxiety, or distress. Procedural pain is a major contributor to every child’s experience with acute pain. Poorly managed procedural...

Profiles of Systemic Inflammatory Response Indicated by C-reactive protein in Children Undergoing Ventricular Assist Device Support and Heart Transplantation
DownloadSpring 2013
C-reactive protein (CRP) is a biomarker of systemic inflammatory response (SIR) which is associated with the extent and activity of disease. The profiles of SIR and the changes of CRP remain unknown in children undergoing ventricular assist device (VAD) support and heart transplantation (HTx). We...

Role of Glucagon-like Peptide-2 and Elemental Formula in Short Bowel Syndrome – Using Neonatal Piglets as an Animal Model
DownloadSpring 2012
Recovery from short bowel syndrome (SBS) requires intestinal adaptation, dependent on enteral nutrition (EN) and peptides, like glucagon-like peptide-2 (GLP-2). The purpose of this thesis was to investigate endogenous GLP-2 production and compare elemental versus polymeric formula in a neonatal...

Cardiac Fatty acids β-oxidation (FAO) markedly increases during maturation and become the major source of energy for the adult heart. However, excessive rates of FAO can compromise cardiac function in obesity, diabetes, and heart failure. Lysine acetylation has recently been identified as a...

Melanoma has the most rapidly rising incidence of all cancers and once metastasized it is very difficult to treat. This makes the identification of molecular pathways that are deregulated in melanoma a novel area of study. β-catenin (β-cat) is a multifunctional protein of the Wnt signaling...
