This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Spring 2015
Mutations in the mitochondrial genome (mtDNA) have been linked to a wide variety of disorders. mtDNA analyses require large starting samples and are complicated by the presence of nuclear mitochondrial pseudogenes (NUMTs), which can cause false positives in PCR-based approaches. Microfluidic...

Enzymatic and Biochemical Analysis of the Hsp90 Chaperone: Regulation by Co-chaperones, SUMOylation, and Interdomain Dynamics
DownloadFall 2017
Hsp90 is an essential eukaryotic molecular chaperone that plays a critical role in protein folding. It regulates the stability, maturation, and activation of numerous client proteins, many of which are involved in oncogenesis. It has been well established that Hsp90 is tightly regulated by...

Fall 2020
Eukaryotic cells are characterized by the presence of membrane-bound organelles. Close proximity between organelles has been observed for decades, but only recently we have really started to understand the importance of these contacts for cellular function. These contacts consist of areas of...

Spring 2016
Schlacht, Alexander Douglas William
One of the features that distinguishes eukaryotes from prokaryotes is the membrane trafficking system. This system underpins much of the functionality of the eukaryotic cell, and is necessary for feeding, motility and communication. Analyses aimed at addressing the evolution of this system have...

Fall 2015
During infection, the host cell environment must be altered to accommodate viral replication. These alterations include hijacking cellular membranes as well as other components to form viral replication compartments and attenuating the host defenses to prevent virus detection and elimination....

Flapwing Dephosphorylates Merlin and Moesin and Regulates Epithelial Integrity in Drosophila
DownloadFall 2013
Merlin is a tumor suppressor protein whose inactivation is associated with familial Neurofibromatosis Type II (NF2) and other sporadic tumors. The growth-suppressive function of Merlin is modulated by reversible phosphorylation. Our previous finding showed the Sterile20 kinase Slik coordinately...

From the basic understanding of N-myristoylation during apoptosis to a potential personalized medical treatment of B cell lymphomas
DownloadFall 2013
Myristoylation is a type of fatty acylation that involves the irreversible attachment of myristate (C14) to an amino-terminal glycine of a protein via an amide bond by N-myristoyltransferase (NMT). The two human N-myristoyltransferases (NMT1 and NMT2) typically play a pro-survival role in cells...
