This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Effects of Terrain on Climate and Consequences for Boreal Songbird Distribution and Refugia
DownloadFall 2024
Local climates have been increasingly recognized in ecological and climatological studies, particularly because anthropogenic climate change poses threats to biodiversity and ecosystems. Local climates exist at scales of meters to up to a few kilometers and are defined by the set of properties...

Spring 2018
Traditionally, personal knowledge and experience have been excluded from academic writing. This exclusion is motivated by epistemological assumptions within our disciplines and in the broader academy that help to determine how we represent the relationship between researchers and their research....

Growth and yield implications of site preparation, competition control, and climate in the western boreal forest
DownloadSpring 2011
The main goal of this thesis was to improve our understanding of the long-term effects of establishment treatments and climate change on lodgepole pine and white spruce growth in the western boreal forests. My dissertation also investigated the combined effects of climate and competition on white...

Hydrological impacts of wildfire and climate change on sediment and organic carbon loads at the watershed scale
DownloadFall 2019
Climate change, extreme weather events, and disturbances such as wildfires alter hydrology, which in turn influences the cycling of water quality constituents such as sediments and nutrients. Organic carbon (OC) is an important element affecting water quality, as it can transport heavy metals,...

Icing dynamics in the lake-dominated, discontinuous permafrost Taiga Shield, and effects on fluvial biogeochemistry, carbon cycling and microbial communities
DownloadFall 2023
Climate warming is affecting freshwater systems across the western Canadian subarctic, due to widespread shifts in precipitation regimes, permafrost degradation, and multi-decadal increases in winter baseflow. These changes are significant on the Taiga Shield, which comprises ~20% of North...

Mixing tree species and density management to reduce drought susceptibility in coastal plantation forests of British Columbia
DownloadFall 2024
The coastal forests of British Columbia have been experiencing longer and more intense droughts in recent years. To evaluate the effects of species composition and density on drought sensitivity, a study was conducted in a Douglas-fir:western redcedar plantation established in 1992, in the...

Modelling Mountain Pine Beetle Abundance and Distribution in Novel Hosts and Changing Climate
DownloadSpring 2024
The mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae, Hopkins 1902), an invasive bark beetle native to North America, has expanded its habitat from central British Columbia to Northern Alberta. This expansion poses an immediate threat to jack pine forests, which extend from Alberta to Nova Scotia....
-
Modelling Short and Long-term Effects of Soil Cover Depth on Tree Growth and Productivity in Reclaimed Landscapes of Northern Alberta
DownloadSpring 2019
Success in establishing productive upland forests on landforms reconstructed using mining waste mainly depends on the cover materials and depth that determine water and nutrient availability for plant growth while mitigating the potential risks or limitations of the substrate that is being...
-
Monitoring Ecosystem Dynamics in the Beaufort Sea using Stable Isotopes in Polar Bears (Ursus maritimus) and Ringed Seals (Pusa hispida)
DownloadSpring 2019
Extensive declines in sea ice extent and thickness are occurring within the Arctic and are projected to continue in the future due to amplified polar warming. As a result, community composition and structure are changing within Arctic ecosystems. Animal diets are influenced by accessibility and...

No-analog ecological communities since the last glacial maximum inferred from fossil pollen records for North America
DownloadFall 2019
Given that efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions appear to fall short, we need to develop adaptation strategies to mitigate anthropogenic climate change impacts, which may include predicting and managing no-analog ecological communities, for example by selecting suitable species assemblages...
