This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Fall 2017
Neutron stars provide the key to understanding the equation of state at the highest pressure and density. Constraining the mass-radius relation of neu- tron stars will provide opportunities to test the currently conflicting candidates for the equation of state. Next generation instruments, such...

Fall 2022
This thesis lays out the work required to design and create a platform for cryogenically compatible testing of on-chip microwave resonators, intended as a platform for quantum-limited electromechanical torque sensing. We have created a platform with less than 8 dB loss across an operating range...

Spring 2021
Both short and long pulse laser plasma interactions are investigated by theoreti- cal analysis and modern computational techniques. An extensive set of simulations of short pulse laser plasma based particle accelerators are performed with the aim of improving performance and diagnostics of the...

Optimization of Processing Parameters and Development of a Radon Trapping System for the NEWS-G Dark Matter Detector
DownloadFall 2021
The direct detection for a dark matter particle is reaching increasingly lower sensitivities and the New Experiments With Spheres-Gas (NEWS-G) collaboration is one of the experiments at the forefront of this. Currently being installed at SNOLAB two kilometres underground, the Spherical...

Spring 2024
We theoretically investigate the effect of fluctuations in the order parameter on the phase transition of 3He under nanoscale confinement of one spatial dimension realized in recent experiments. We derive a new quasi two-dimensional free energy that relies on a 3×2 complex matrix instead of the...

Fall 2021
String theory requires the existence of extra spatial dimensions. They must be compactified since they have not yet been detected. If the size of these extra dimensions is large then it is possible that the string scale Ms could be on the order of TeV. In the Dp-brane model of string theory...

Searches for Magnetic Monopoles and Highly Ionising Particles at 13 TeV at the LHC with MoEDAL
DownloadFall 2023
The standard model of particle physics describes the experimental data collected to date remarkably well. However, this theory (the standard model of particle physics) does not provide a complete description of reality. What is dark matter and what is the origin of dark matter? How do we explain...

Searching for Long Lived Particles with ADAM (Auxiliary Detector above the ATLAS Muon Spectrometer)
DownloadFall 2024
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the world’s largest particle accelerator, delivering proton-proton (p − p) collisions to various experiments, including ATLAS (A Toroidal LHC ApparatuS). The proposed Auxiliary Detector above the ATLAS Muon Spectrometer (ADAM) aims to expand the physics...

Fall 2022
In astrophysics, stellar evolution is one of the most discussed topics. Although a significant amount of research and advancement of instrumentation over the last few decades have contributed to this field greatly, our understanding of the pre-main sequence evolution remains largely incomplete....
