This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Fall 2012
Numerous investigations have suggested that dysregulation of the neurotransmitter glutamate (Glu) plays an important role in certain neuropsychiatric disorders, like depression. Pregnancy and the postpartum period are associated with the most substantial physiological alteration of female...
-
Fall 2009
In rodents, stress and corticosteroids rapidly increase excitatory neurotransmission. During excitatory neurotransmission, glutamate concentrations are maintained by conversion of glutamine to glutamate. The hypothesis was that cortisol would alter human prefrontal glutamine or glutamate...

Fall 2011
Risk factors for postpartum depression (PPD) include history of a major depressive episode, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, or a prior episode of PPD. Fluctuations in estrogen, progesterone, and neuroactive steroids occur in the postpartum, and these molecules act as modulators of a number of...

Glutamate Levels in the Medial Prefrontal Cortex of Healthy Women during Pregnancy and the Postpartum
DownloadFall 2012
The substantial female hormone fluctuations associated with pregnancy and the postpartum have been linked to a greater risk of developing depressive symptoms. Glutamate (Glu) has been implicated in the pathophysiology of major depression. The objective of this thesis was to investigate MPFC Glu...

Role of Glutamate and GABA in a mouse model expressing mutant human APP in the absence of NPC1 protein
DownloadSpring 2013
Cholesterol plays a critical role in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pathogenesis, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. To address this issue we have generated a line of ANPC transgenic mice that overexpress mutant-human amyloid precursor protein in the absence of cholesterol transporting...

Variation in in vivo prefrontal GABA, glutamate and glutamine – effects of reproductive factors, cortisol and major depressive disorder
DownloadFall 2017
Variations in glutamate and γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), excitatory and inhibitory amino acid neurotransmitters in the brain, have been linked with cyclical changes across the menstrual cycle and in stress and stress-related mental disorders. We used 3.0 Tesla proton magnetic resonance...
