The Circumpolar Digital Image Collection is a collection of photos, slides, other images and contributions shared by many of the University of Alberta’s polar researchers. Images in the collection may be used for teaching and research purposes. For any other use, please contact the Canadian Circumpolar Institute.

This horsetail plant was growing in the back yard of an inn in Rovaniemi. It was 47cm from ground to tip. Equisetum or horsetail is a spore producing vascular plant. Members of this genus are abundant around the world and the family is widely represented in the fossil record.

When salmon is dried, it twists and curls. When the salmon is bundled it needs to be compressed to be more easily carried on a sled. This simple fulcrum press compacts the salmon so that it can bundled tightly.
