This badge is held in a display about the 418 Squadron at the Alberta Aviation Museum in Edmonton, Alberta. The Royal Canadian Air Force 418 Squadron was a reserve squadron that operated out of Edmonton from 1941 to 1994. The badge, which was introduced in June, 1958, features an image of an Inuit spear hunter on an ice floe with the northern lights behind him. The badge was designed after a contest among Inuit child patients at the Charles Camsell Hospital in Edmonton. At the bottom is the motto "piyautailili" which is Inuktitut for "Defend Even Unto Death. The presence of the Inuit image and motto was in recognition to the squadron's former nickname, "Defenders of the North".
The squadron few light transport and search and rescue missions across the Prairies and the North for more than 25 years. -
