Weaving functional objects from birch bark is a traditional craft in Finland and other Northern European countries. These woven birch bark shoes and backpack (see related link) were donated to the Sointula Museum by the Renwell Family. The Sointula Museum holds artifacts and archival documents from the Finnish utopian community, begun on Malcolm Island, B.C. in 1909.
