This is a surface mine, so the entrance is the top of a long covered stairway that descends the surface of the hill and leads out onto a hillside strewn with shattered rock. The stairway and cover are made of wood. A peeled rail fence runs along the edge of the hill to the entrance. The sign on the front of the entrance reads "Lampivaara Ametistikaivos". A pile of rock sits beside the entrance. The background of the photograph shows typical pine forest environment of Lapland.
