Design and Development of a Novel Tensile Testing Apparatus for Time-Resolved Betatron X-Ray Tomographic Imaging
-
High-resolution imaging of deformation processes in materials under load requires controllable and stable loading conditions and the ability to vary sample orientation relative to the imaging source. A novel tensile testing apparatus has been designed, developed, and characterized for time-resolved imaging of defect formation and evolution in additively manufactured (AM) using compact laser-driven betatron x-ray sources. The system allows controllable tensile loads to be applied to small diameter samples and enables stepwise rotation for tomographic x-ray imaging. Several improvements have been made to the original design to ensure consistent testing conditions and imaging quality.
