•Rural communities in Canada have diverse forms and processes of sustainability planning.•Sustainability plans in Canada are also highly variable in form and content.•Community characteristics do have an effect upon the structure and content of plans.•There are regional consistencies in emphasis upon different pillars of sustainability, and smaller provinces have more diversified models.•Social sustainability is a clear priority for many communities, and particularly for small/Northern/remote communities.
