When we think about innovation in LIS, we often think digital and electronic, but we also have the opportunity to explore older technologies and non-traditional media that are not often associated with libraries. In this presentation, I will provide an introduction to one such medium: tabletop role-playing games (RPGs). I will focus on independently- created RPGs and the ways in which they can be integrated into library programming. My discussion of the theoretical aspects draws on examples from various games and systems, but I will also give a brief overview of three indie RPGs -- Follow, Be Witching, and The Deep Forest -- that can be used in programs, as well as some general tips for facilitating games.
