Accelerated hydrothermal aging of a commercial polyimide film was studied via ultimate tensile strength and FTIR spectroscopy. The significance of hydrolysis of the imide functional groups was determined using chemometric analysis of ATR-FTIR data. The results suggest the potential of polyimide to mimic the hydrothermal degradation of fire protective clothing in an end-of-life sensor.
