Intersection of Play and Board Games with Spatial and Logical Reasoning: Children's Learning with Games in Elementary School Mathematics

  • Author(s) / Creator(s)
  • SSHRC IG awarded 2021: the objectives are to investigate incorporation of games in elementary school mathematics as a tool for developing logical reasoning (systematic thinking that results in conclusions) and spatial reasoning (ability to visualize objects moving in space). The insights could lead
to theoretical and pragmatic understandings about the nature of play in guiding teaching and learning of elementary mathematics. While teachers routinely incorporate mathematical games, this has not been examined systematically. Researchers have yet to explore the intersection of spatial reasoning and commercial games, and more importantly how play(fulness) contributes to learning spatial and logical reasoning. Through investigating abstract strategy games, our innovative project will strengthen intersections among play and board games with logical and spatial reasoning.
