SSHRC Insight grant awarded 2021. This project will investigate conflicts between emerging permissive and older purist
ideologies of English in Germany. For German youth, English is coming to be viewed as a culturally neutral language, making Germany a good "living laboratory" for the study of trans-national English. The project will sample the linguistic landscape (written text in public spaces) of Mannheim and Leipzig, using a novel methodology that pairs linguistic landscapes and interactional linguistics with focus group data, to trace participants' ideas about how English should be used, in relation to visuals of the linguistic landscape. Our results will inform theories of transnational English and help sociolinguists understand the link
between language ideologies and linguistic landscapes. The linguistic landscape data will placed in an open access repository for researchers and the general public, including language policy makers, -
