Evaluation Capacity Network: Collaborating for Impacts in Early Childhood Practices, Programs, and Policies

  • SSHRC Awarded PG 2019: Evidence demonstrates that children’s early experiences and environments profoundly impact their development, making early childhood a priority across Canada. Despite significant investment in early childhood programs, indicators have persistently revealed shortfalls. Moreover, professionals from multiple sectors who develop and implement programs to improve child development have increasingly been asked to demonstrate evidence of success as they seek or renew funding. Instead of supporting success, this has resulted in a quagmire of data that inhibits decision making and action. As a result, there is an urgent need to bring together funders, practitioners, researchers, and policymakers to transform evaluation values, methods, tools, and training. The goal of our research partnership is to collaboratively develop community-driven and culturally relevant approaches for producing and using evidence to improve early childhood practice, programs, and policy towards system effectiveness. This work addresses a gap identified by those working in the early childhood field and the societal importance of realizing early childhood outcomes.
