This article traces the intricate web of allusions in Bai Xianyong's (Pai Hsien-yung) short story "Wandering the Garden, Waking from a Dream" to uncover how allusion helps constitute an imagined national community for the female protagonist in the story. It draws on notions of postcoloniality and exile and is inspired by Freud's classic article "Das Unheimlich" (The Uncanny).
