This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Mechanistic Simulation Study of Steam-Solvent Coinjection for Bitumen and Heavy-Oil Recovery
DownloadFall 2013
Solvent-steam coinjection has been proposed as an alternative to SAGD. Detailed oil recovery mechanisms of coinjection are little known due to complex interaction of phase behavior, and fluid and energy flow. This research conducts a detailed mechanistic study of phase behavior and its...

Fall 2021
Antibiotics with unexplored mechanisms are needed to fight the alarming rise in antimicrobial resistance. Antimicrobial compounds targeting peptidoglycan precursor lipid II, the Achilles’ heel of bacteria, can be a suitable template. Therefore, structural studies of membrane mimetic models may...

Fall 2020
Over 200 million people worldwide are exposed to the proven human carcinogen arsenic, due to contaminated drinking water. Animal studies have shown that arsenic and the essential trace element selenium can undergo mutual detoxification through the formation of the seleno-bis(S-glutathionyl)...

Spring 2018
Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are small protein toxins produced by different bacterial strains to fight against closely related strains in their competitive environment. AMPs have been isolated and studied for their interesting properties, including treatment of pathogenic diseases. In this...

Mechanistic studies on the uptake and intracellular trafficking of DNA complexes in primary cells using lipid-modified cationic polymers as non-viral gene carrier
DownloadFall 2012
This thesis work is aimed at addressing some of the fundamental questions surrounding the intracellular fate of plasmid DNA in clinically-relevant primary cells, when delivered with lipid-modi!ed cationic polymers as gene carriers. We developed an optimized procedure for the transfection of...

Spring 2022
Dendritic cells (DCs) are antigen presenting cells critical for the initiation of the adaptive immune response. As such, DCs continually circulate the body to survey for foreign antigen in the periphery. DCs encounter a milieu of environmental cues within the traversed microenvironment that can...
