Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Background: Vitamin A status is an important health determinant. Deficiency of this micronutrient is a serious global health issue in the developing nations as the leading cause of preventable blindness in children and is a significant contributor to long-term morbidity and mortality. Nutritional...

Mechanisms regulating Poa pratensis L. and Festuca campestris Rybd. within the foothills fescue grasslands of southern Alberta
DownloadFall 2011
Invasion of non-native species such as Poa pratensis L. has become a serious threat to the conservation of bunch grass communities including foothills fescue grasslands in Alberta, Canada. Conservation efforts are currently limited by a poor understanding of the ecological mechanisms responsible...

Heart muscle contraction is regulated by calcium binding to cardiac troponin C. This induces troponin I (cTnI) switch region binding to the regulatory domain of troponin C (cNTnC). Compounds that directly modulate the interface of cNTnC and cTnI switch region have potential for treating heart...

Mechanisms underlying lymphopenia-driven autoimmunity in the setting of co-inhibitory molecule deficiency
DownloadFall 2016
T lymphocytes (T cells) are powerful directors and effectors of immunity. The system of pseudo-random rearrangements of the T cell receptor (TCR) loci that underlie their ability to recognize a vast universe of molecular patterns is at once useful and dangerous, because many T cells develop TCR...

Mechanisms underlying P2Y1 receptor-mediated excitation of the inspiratory network in vitro; and NPY-induced stress resilience in vitro and in vivo
DownloadSpring 2021
The present thesis will discuss the cellular and molecular mechanisms by which neurochemical systems modulate the activity of CNS networks underlying breathing and anxiety. The thesis is divided into two parts. The first part examines the mechanisms by which the neuromodulator/neurotransmitter...
