This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Characterizing the Efficacy of Ice Recrystallization Inhibitors as a Novel Cryoprotectant for Lung Cryopreservation
DownloadFall 2020
Although lung transplant remains the only option for patients suffering from end-stage lung disease, donor lung supply is currently insufficient to meet demand. While many lungs become available for transplant, most are discarded due to failure to meet physiologic or compatibility criteria. Many...

Spring 2013
Chavali Venkata Subramanya, Ravi Shankar
The In-gel polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology developed by our group at the University of Alberta makes use of PCR reagents entrapped within nano-liter polyacrylamide gels. To adapt this technology for use at the point of care, methods were developed to preserve gel-based PCR reagents by...

Importance of donor factors and whole blood processing in the storage injury of red blood cells
DownloadFall 2016
Background: The processing and storage of blood components prior to transfusion are key parts of the blood banking industry. Recently, however, it has been suggested that the long term storage of red blood cells for transfusion could have detrimental clinical implications. In this study we...

Fall 2016
Hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN), characterized by anemia, jaundice, and edema, can lead to fetal/neonatal death in its most severe form. Linked to maternal immune response to the RhD antigen, the disease can be prevented by administering Rh immune globulin (RhIg) to D-negative...

Spring 2013
The field of transfusion medicine is dependent upon the ability to store and preserve the native functionality of red blood cells (RBCs). The subtle membrane changes that the RBC incurs during storage can result in compromised quality and diminished function upon transfusion. A custom adhesion...

Fall 2017
Da Silveira Cavalcante, Luciana
Red blood cells (RBCs) are the most commonly used components in cell therapy and their transfusion save millions of lives every year. These benefits were only achieved through advances in blood banking storage techniques that guarantee an available supply of blood to support medical emergencies...
-
The Efficacy of Using Small Molecule Ice Recrystallization Inhibitors to Enable the Frozen Storage of Livers
DownloadFall 2020
The limited storage times afforded by hypothermic preservation at 0 °C to 4 °C imposes several logistic constraints on the organ transplant network. In the case of livers, two-thirds of wait listed patients do not receive transplants in Canada, which is partially attributed to the 12 h storage...

The Role of Extracellular Vesicles and Red Blood Cell Manufacturing Methods on Transfusion-Related Immunomodulation
DownloadSpring 2019
Transfusion of red blood concentrates (RCCs) is a lifesaving procedure. Nonetheless, a number of studies have revealed that transfusion of RCC products is still associated with increased risk of serious clinical outcomes. Additionally, studies demonstrating the deleterious consequences of...
