This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

The Biochemical Characterization of the ATPase activity of three Hsp82 point mutants: Hsp82pA587T, Hsp82pG313S, and Hsp82pE381K
DownloadFall 2012
Chaperones are family of proteins that assist in protein folding. 90 kDa Heat shock protein (Hsp90 mammalians, Hsp82 in Saccharomyces cerevisiae) is a well conserved chaperone that is essential for eukaryotic viability. The Hsp90 cycle is regulated by the ability to hydrolyze ATP, and through the...

The Biocultural Entanglement of Athlete Training Responses Across the Menstrual Cycle in Recreational Runners
DownloadFall 2023
Background: Recent progress in exercise science research has facilitated greater understanding of female athlete physiology, in particular regarding the menstrual cycle (MC) and human performance. Yet, a comprehensive understanding of this topic remains tentative (Casto, 2022). Existing research...

The Biogeography of Ground Beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) on the Islands of Lac la Ronge, Saskatchewan, Canada
DownloadFall 2015
Islands offer unusual opportunities for studying theoretical concepts in ecology. I studied the role of island size and isolation in structuring assemblages of ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) on the islands and adjacent mainland of Lac la Ronge, Saskatchewan, Canada. Carabid beetles were...

The biological function and clinical significance of STAT1 in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma
DownloadFall 2016
Although esophageal cancer makes up only 1% of all the cancers in western countries, it is a common death cancer in other areas, especially China. Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is the most common type of esophageal cancer in Chaoshan, an area with high incidence rate of this disease...

The biology and characterization of NOD-like receptors in goldfish (Carassius auratus L.) macrophages exposed to bacterial pathogens
DownloadSpring 2017
The recognition of pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) by pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) is important for the initiation of the host defense against pathogens. NOD-like receptors (NLRs) are a family of PRRs that primarily detect the cytosolic PAMPs of the pathogens. The NLRs have...

The Biology and Ecology of Polymorphic Lake Trout, Salvelinus namaycush, in Great Bear Lake, Northwest Territories
DownloadFall 2014
Post-glacial lakes, a common feature in northern landscapes, provide favorable ecosystems for studying intra-specific diversity in fishes. Great Bear Lake, with its large size and virtually pristine, recently colonized cold water habitats, provides unique opportunities for Lake Trout (Salvelinus...
