This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Engineering Enhanced Performance in Plant Diacylglycerol Acyltransferase and Long-Chain Acyl-CoA Synthetase
DownloadSpring 2018
Triacylglycerol (TAG) is the major storage lipid in higher plants and has great nutritional and industrial value. Plant storage lipid biosynthesis involves different subcellular compartments and a complex network of enzymes and proteins. Among them, endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-bound diacylglycerol...

Engineering Gene Vectors: Synthesis of Thioether-Lipid Polyethyleneimine Conjugates for pDNA and siRNA Delivery
DownloadFall 2024
Gene therapy offers a promising approach for treatment of a diverse array of diseases at their genetic root causes. The cationic polyethyleneimine (PEI) has been extensively used for successful non-viral nucleic acid delivery in experimental systems, but its clinical utility has been hampered by...

Spring 2021
Information is transmitted between neurons through the flow of different ions and the release of neurotransmitters at speeds on the order of milliseconds. The advent of genetically encoded fluorescent protein (FP)-based optical indicators for neuronal activity, which can be precisely targeted...

Engineering Kinesthetic Perceptions: The Restoration of Movement Sense in Upper Limb Prosthetic Use
DownloadFall 2017
Upper limb movement yields rich streams of sensory information that are cortically integrated with motor commands. This is drastically altered in those with upper limb (UL) amputation as sensations of touch and movement are inherently lost. This absence impedes prosthetic control by forcing...

Engineering nitrogen use efficiency in Oryza sativa by the developmental over-expression of barley alanine aminotransferase using a novel rice promoter
DownloadFall 2011
Nitrogen is the main limiting component to plant growth and development. With increasing cost of food production the development of nitrogen use efficient (NUE) crop plants has become of interest. In our group, the over-expression of barley alanine aminotransferase (HvAlaAT) cDNA by the btg26...

Spring 2015
Fluorescent proteins (FP) and FP-based biosensors have become essential tools for cell biology and neuroscience research. This thesis describes efforts to engineer new FPs with red emission and novel genetically encoded biosensors based on red FPs. Directed evolution and semi-rational design are...

Spring 2011
Advanced optical technologies profoundly impact countless aspects of modern life. At the heart of these technologies is the manipulation of light using optical materials. Currently, optical technologies are created using naturally occurring materials. However, a new and exciting approach is to...
