This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Enantioenriched Cyclic Boronates as Versatile Building Blocks: Synthesis, Mechanism and Applications
DownloadSpring 2020
Since the discovery and development of the famed Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction, organoboron compounds have gained increasing attention as small molecule building blocks in organic synthesis and drug discovery efforts. In this regard, enantioenriched alkyl boronic esters are ideal...

Fall 2022
Functionalized piperidine rings are frequently found in a variety of alkaloids and pharmaceuticals attesting to the importance of this class of heterocycles in drug discovery. According to recent data, the piperidine ring is the most abundant heterocycle found in FDA approved drugs. Thus, gaining...

Spring 2011
This thesis discusses the fate of individual enantiomers and isomers of organohalogen compounds (OHCs) in the environment and the development of analytical methods to facilitate such determinations. A novel proof of principle anion attachment atmospheric pressure photoionization (AA-APPI)...

Fall 2011
Propargylic alcohol natural products are found in many species of terrestrial plants and marine organisms. Because these compounds are usually isolated from the natural source in only small amounts, few studies of propargylic alcohol natural products have been conducted to date. Nevertheless,...

Enantioselective Preparation of a cis-β-Boronyl Cyclobutylcarboxyester Scaffold and Its Highly Diastereoselective Nickel/Photoredox Dual-Catalyzed Cross-Coupling
DownloadSpring 2021
Chiral cyclobutanes are components of numerous bioactive natural products and consequently they have also gained significant attention in medicinal chemistry. Optically enriched cyclobutylboronates can serve as valuable synthetic intermediates for the synthesis of a broad variety of chiral...

Encounter and Engagement with Curricular Material Culture in Multicultural Educational Contexts
DownloadSpring 2018
The number of immigrants entering Canada annually is projected to rise to 333,600 by 2035 (Statistics Canada, 2010). This migration increase also means an upsurge in newcomers in Canadian classrooms, which creates pedagogical challenges and concerns (Canadian Teachers’ Federation, 2013). These...
