Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

On the evolutionary history and population genetic structure of the North American mountain goat (Oreamnos americanus)
DownloadSpring 2012
The spatiotemporal scale at which genetic diversity is assessed can provide insights into both broad- and fine-scale patterns in ecology and evolution. I examined the distribution of genetic diversity and the evolutionary history of the North American mountain goat (Oreamnos americanus). I first...

Fall 2014
With well over 3,400 described species, snakes undoubtedly represent one of the most successful groups of reptiles. Much has been written about their ecology, behavior, anatomy, relationships and evolution. However, despite the debate about the origin of this taxonomic group dating back to the...

Fall 2018
A full understanding of the evolution of novel forms requires inference about their origins through the study of variation in extant taxa and clues from the fossil record. However, the origins of morphological diversity in many groups are obscured by the scarcity of transitional fossils or...

Optimization of semiochemical monitoring for pea leaf weevil, Sitona lineatus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), in the Prairie Provinces
DownloadFall 2017
The pea leaf weevil, Sitona lineatus Linnaeus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is an invasive pest of increasing concern to pulse producers in the Canadian Prairie Provinces. Pea leaf weevil larvae cause damage to field pea (Pisum sativum) and faba bean (Vicia faba) crops by feeding on root nodules...

Optimization, adaptation and application of protein misfolding cyclic amplification to detection of prions in blood plasma
DownloadFall 2010
The PMCA assay was optimized for adaptation to low level detection of PrPSc in hamster plasma. Evaluation of numerous key variables of the PMCA assay led to an optimized protocol capable of ~3 log10 amplification after 32 cycles (two 16 hour rounds). When commercially purchased normal hamster...

Ornamental colouration as an indicator of environmental pollution with application to the tree swallow (Tachycineta bicolour)
DownloadSpring 2019
Anthropogenic pollution causes habitat degradation for many species, but its effects on individuals can be difficult to detect until they result in the decline or disappearance of populations. Current techniques to monitor the effects of pollution on wildlife usually include invasive sampling of...

Osteology, Taxonomy, Phylogeny, and Body Shape Changes of Eocene Catostomid and Problematic Catostomid Fishes
DownloadFall 2016
Extant catostomid fishes occupy diverse aquatic ecosystems and niches in North America (NA). Less than 3% of catostomid taxonomic richness, or two species, are found outside of NA in Asia. Such adjunct and unbalanced distribution pattern has been established since the late Oligocene, when...
