Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Fall 2012
Competition for prey is known to narrow the trophic niche width of freshwater fishes. Upon release from interspecific competition, the niche variation hypothesis (NVH) predicts that population niche width will expand via increased inter-individual variation in resource use. I compared the...

Influence of forest canopies on the deposition of methylmercury to boreal ecosystem watersheds
DownloadFall 2010
Methylmercury (MeHg) is a potent vertebrate neurotoxin and a contaminant of global concern. Increased anthropogenic emissions of mercury (Hg) to the atmosphere have led to increased bioaccumulation of MeHg in top predatory organisms such as fish, the consumption of which is the main exposure...

Influence of forestry and conspecific attraction on habitat use and reproductive activity of the Canada warbler (Cardellina canadensis) in the western boreal forest: Implications for critical habitat identification
DownloadSpring 2017
Recovery strategies for species at risk are legally mandated in Canada and the Government of Canada must identify which habitat is important for a species and which activities result in its destruction. The Canada Warbler (Cardellina canadensis) has been designated as a threatened species in...

Influence of Semiochemical Cues on Mountain Pine Beetle Flight and Subsequent Effect of Flight on Host Colonisation Processes
DownloadFall 2019
The mountain pine beetle, Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), is an aggressive pine pest in western North America. This beetle undergoes cyclical population outbreaks, and in the most recent outbreak the beetle expanded its range to the north and east. During this range...

Fall 2020
Influenza A viruses are a major cause of human and animal disease worldwide. Periodically, avian influenza A viruses from wild waterfowl, like ducks, pass through intermediate agricultural hosts and emerge into the human population as zoonotic diseases with high mortality rates and pandemic...

Insights from Sponge Transcriptomes & Physiology about the Early Evolution of Nervous Systems
DownloadFall 2014
The origin of neurons and neural systems is a research area that has begun to experience increased progress with the growing availability of genomic data from a range of basal metazoans and closely related outgroups. This has allowed a reevaluation of previous models of neural evolution....

Insights into temperature adaptation in the Thermotogae gained through transcriptomics and comparative genomics
DownloadFall 2014
Thermophilic microbes are extremophiles that live at high temperatures. In order to survive and maintain function of their biological molecules, they have a suite of characteristics not found in organisms that grow at moderate temperatures (mesophiles) that range from the cellular to the protein...
-
Insights into the role of the flagellar glycosylation system in Campylobacter jejuni phage-host interactions
DownloadFall 2018
Bacteriophages (phages) are the viruses that infect bacteria. Studying how phages interact with their hosts can inspire new ways of controlling bacterial pathogens and can highlight important facets of the biology of both organisms. Furthermore, phage-host characterization can inform exploitation...

Integrating ecological and social approaches for promoting the conservation of carnivores in a human-dominated landscape of southern Chile
DownloadFall 2015
Mammalian carnivores inhabiting human-dominated landscapes may face reduced and heterogeneous distributions of feeding resources while being more exposed to humans and introduced carnivores. Therefore, sustainable landscape planning intended to conserve carnivores in human-dominated landscapes...

Fall 2015
Speciation can be an elaborate process. Delimiting species and reconstructing evolutionary relationships may be similarly complex, revealing gene tree discordance, cryptic species, geographic structuring or hybridization. In order to solve such systematic problems, a careful balance should be...
