Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Specialist predators with a limited diet may be less adaptable to environmental change than generalists, which consume a diversity of prey. As the climate changes, ecological homogenization is occurring, where generalist species outcompete specialists, reducing ecosystem complexity. In Arctic...

Foraging-predator avoidance trade-offs made by migrant and resident elk (Cervus elaphus) on their sympatric winter range
DownloadFall 2009
Migratory behaviour of the Ya Ha Tinda (YHT) elk population is diminishing while the number of residents remaining on the YHT winter range year-round is increasing. Previous research addressing the fitness consequences of each migratory strategy assumed there was no advantage to either segment...

Forest Succession and Nutritional Carrying Capacity of Elk since the 1980 Eruption of Mount St. Helens
DownloadFall 2016
There has been increasing concern over declines in habitat quality for elk (Cervus elaphus) on industrial timber lands west of Mount St. Helens due to canopy closure and the loss of nutritional resources related to succession of early seral stands created by the 1980 eruption. Vegetative...

Formation and maintenance of permanent perched wetlands in the Boreal Plain of Western Canada
DownloadSpring 2017
The Boreal Plains Ecozone is characterized by a moisture deficit climate, as regional precipitation is less than potential evapotranspiration. Perched peatlands situated 20 m above regional groundwater have been identified as common features across the landscape in the Utikuma Region Study Area...

Fall 2011
Although the peak diversity of Pinaceae is reflected by many Cretaceous seed cones representing extinct genera, the oldest definitive record of the family is attributable to an extant genus. A seed cone discovered at the Valanginian Apple Bay locality extends the record of Picea by ~75 Ma,...

From Drought to Deluge: Implications of variable hydrologic connectivity on lake ecosystem functions in the Boreal Plains of Western Canada
DownloadFall 2021
Presence and functions of lakes are dependent on hydrological connectivity to the terrestrial landscape. Inter-annual wet-dry periods, and their amplification through climate change, can influence hydrological connectivity and affect the delivery of water and solutes from various terrestrial...

Interferon Inducible Transmembrane Proteins (IFITMs) can restrict the entry of a wide range of viruses. IFITM3 localizes to endosomes and can potently restrict the replication the influenza A virus (IAV), and several other viruses that also enter host cells through the endocytic pathway. Given...

RNA helicases function in all aspects of RNA metabolism, regulating a diverse range of cellular processes by rearranging RNA structures and mediating RNA-protein interactions. Prokaryotic RNA helicases have been shown to have roles in RNA degradation, ribosome biogenesis and translation, with...
