The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Fall 2023
Montane rivers are some of the most pristine water sources on earth, providing a wide variety of ecosystem services to downstream regions. However, these cold-water ecosystems are at risk due to climatic warming and other anthropogenic impacts. Importantly, they are potentially being impacted by...

Global warming is contributing to extreme climatic events, especially at higher elevations and latitudes. Phytoplankton assemblages are highly sensitive to these climate-related environmental changes, which include heatwaves and drought events. Knowledge gaps exist concerning the cumulative...

Spring 2015
Personality has been documented in diverse taxa and growing attention is being directed towards the ecological implications of consistent variation in individual behaviour. These implications include the rise in habituation behaviour by wildlife living in human-disturbed areas, which has resulted...

Ecological importance of cross-feeding of the intermediate metabolite 1,2-propanediol between bacterial gut symbionts
DownloadSpring 2020
Cross-feeding of intermediary metabolites such as 1,2-propanediol (1,2-PDO) has been proposed to have an important role in the establishment of syntrophic interactions among gut symbionts, but its ecological importance has not been empirically established. This thesis shows that growth of L....

Ecology and management of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and mule deer (O. hemionus) of east-central Alberta in relation to chronic wasting disease
DownloadFall 2010
Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a fatal pathogen affecting white-tailed and mule deer in east-central Alberta, and I addressed two current limitations of CWD management. First, to improve precision and accuracy of density estimates obtained from aerial surveys, I evaluated alternative survey...

Suspension feeders are an important component of carbon exchange between the water column and the seafloor, a process called pelagic-benthic coupling. Sponges (Phylum Porifera) are filter feeders that consume especially small particles. They eat bacteria, which are inaccessible to most other...
