The role of cysteine and the Cpx envelope stress response in alleviating zinc induced stress in Escherichia coli
DownloadFall 2018
Circumscribing the interior of Gram negative bacteria are two sets of layers: an inner and outer membrane. The periplasm and murein occupy the space between these membranes and acts as a site for protein folding and degradation. The bacterial envelope, as a whole, plays an essential role in the...

Efflux pumps belonging to the resistance-nodulation-division (RND) superfamily in bacteria are involved in antibiotic resistance and solvent tolerance but have an unknown physiological role. EmhABC, a RND-type efflux pump in the hydrocarbon-degrading bacterium Pseudomonas fluorescens LP6a,...

Fall 2020
Understanding the causes behind population cycles is a fundamental issue in ecology, and has been the focus of research for decades. One of the most prominent examples of cyclical species is the snowshoe hare (Lepus americanus), a primary prey species in the North American boreal forest that...

The role of habitat quality and climate in the dynamics of occupancy and survival of a population of collared pikas (Ochotona collaris) in the Ruby Range, Yukon Territory
DownloadFall 2013
I examined the role of habitat quality and climate in the dynamics of occupancy and survival of a population of collared pikas in the Yukon Territory, Canada. Annual surveys of marked individuals over an 11 year period (1999 to 2009) within a geographically isolated metapopulation were used to...

The Role of Human Altered Landscapes and Predators in the Spatial Overlap Between Moose, Wolves, and Endangered Caribou
DownloadFall 2014
Human altered landscapes can cause the endangerment or extinction of a species, not only by a direct loss of habitat but by altering predator-prey relationships. Predators can drive prey to extinction when the density of the predator becomes subsidized by another abundant, alternate prey. Such...

The Role of Iron in Suppressing Internal Phosphorus Loading and Toxic Cyanobacterial Blooms in Freshwater Lakes
DownloadFall 2013
Harmful algal blooms occur in nutrient-rich lakes around the world, diminishing the value of these ecosystems for wildlife and humans. Management of algal blooms is an on-going challenge for lake managers and policy makers. The overarching goal of this research was to advance our understanding of...
