This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Behavior of Bitumen-coated Fine Solids in Organic Media from Non-aqueous Extraction of Oil Sands
DownloadFall 2019
The non-aqueous extraction (NAE) technique for recovering bitumen from oil sands ore has been proposed as a potential substitute to the conventional water-based extraction method in order to reduce the environmental and carbon footprint of extracting this natural resource. In the NAE process,...

Fall 2015
Oil sands found in Athabasca and Cold Lake regions of Northern Alberta form Canada’s primary source of energy reserves. Asphaltenes, a significant part of bitumen is often considered to be the least valuable component of crude oil due to various factors such as difficulty in transporting and...
-
Fall 2015
Inorganic particle deposition and unsteady slag flow is one of the main issues in entrained-flow gasifiers causing several problems, especially, tap hole blockage and emergency shutdown. For the first part of the experiments in this study, slag collector probe was used to take depositions and...

Beyond Viscosity—How Density, Vibration and Interfacial Tension Affect Solvent Aided Bitumen Production
DownloadFall 2016
Bitumen and heavy oil comprise a significant percentage of proven oil reserves globally. The environmental impacts of producing these resources with current technologies is a concern for environmentalists, oil producing companies, resource rich jurisdictions and society at large. Dilution of the...

Fall 2012
This thesis is focused on the design of a series of bi-metallic catalyst for enhancing the hydrogen sorption kinetics of magnesium hydride. We have utilized thin films deposited by magnetron sputtering technique as model systems to study various alloys and compositions. It has been known that the...

Spring 2017
With the rapid development of electrified transportation, electrochemical energy storage devices will be more important than they have ever been in human history. Lithium-ion batteries are considered as the most energy efficient candidates, due to their relatively long cycle life. However, their...

Spring 2011
Selective ring opening of naphthenic molecules is a preferred reaction to increase cetane number of fuels, and it should result in products with no loss in molecular weight and longer alkyl side chains. Benzocyclopentane (indan) ring opening was studied under hydrogen atmospheric pressure at 609...

Fall 2014
Activity, selectivity and stability enhancements often observed in bimetallic catalysts make them an inseparable part of today’s chemical industry. However, it is usually problematic to understand the real interactions resulting in such improvements due to the lack of control over the bimetallic...

Biodegradation of Polyhydroxybutyrate by Bacterial Strains, Native Extracellular PHB Depolymerases, and Structural Variants
DownloadSpring 2019
Thanks to its biodegradability and biocompatibility, among other properties, the biodegradable polymer polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) has the potential to become an extensively used plastic in the production of a variety of products, from polymer films and everyday objects to specialized devices like...
