This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Spring 2023
The electrochromic (EC) effect has attracted constant research efforts since it was first described in the early 19th century. Conventionally, EC oxides (e.g., WO3, MoO3, V2O5, and NiO) are employed to modulate light transmittance in smart windows, which allow for up to 80% optical transmission...

Fall 2016
This thesis describes the fabrication and characterization of visible-range hollow Bragg waveguides. A wafer bonding method was first utilized to fabricate tapered hollow Bragg waveguides, which can function as the dispersive element of an integrated spectrometer. Etched channels coated with...

Fall 2013
This thesis focuses on the development of integrated silicon-based nanoplasmonic waveguides and devices for use in all-optical plasmonic circuitry. To this end, metal-insulator-semiconductor-insulator-metal (MISIM) and metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) hybrid nanoplasmonic waveguides were...

Miniaturized Microwave, Millimeter-wave, and sub-Terahertz Tunable Guided Wave Structures for Wireless Communication Beamforming Applications
DownloadSpring 2024
In order to meet the growing demands for faster and more reliable wireless communication networks, as well as to connect the billions of new devices that will require on demand access to the internet, the telecommunication industry seeks to expand the current wireless communication infrastructure...

Spring 2014
This thesis presents the realization and characterization of passive and active photonic and nanoplasmonic waveguides for applications in all-optical circuitry. The key results focus on generating visible light in nanoscale silicon waveguides through nonlinear interactions and demonstrating...
