Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

COMPARISON OF CHEESE, YOGURT, AND MILK EFFECTS ON GLUCOSE HOMEOSTASIS AND LIVER LIPID ACCUMULATION IN MICE FED HIGH-FAT DIET
DownloadSpring 2022
Abstract Background: Many human observational studies show an inverse or neutral association between dairy consumption and the risk of diabetes. Our lab’s previous work suggests that both low and high-fat cheese consumption improves glucose homeostasis in insulin-resistant (IR), prediabetic rats....
-
Fall 2012
This research examines Canadian consumer preferences for milk and yogurt products, both those currently available in the marketplace as well as hypothetical products. Self-reported consumption and choice experiments are used to determine consumer preferences for various attributes and how these...
-
Fall 2024
The increasing prevalence of overweight and obesity worldwide has raised the alarm for urgently needed preventative strategies to counter the trend of increased risk associated with these conditions, including type 2 diabetes (T2D) and metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MASLD). Energy...

Effect of Consuming Dairy Fats on Obesity-Related Cardiometabolic Perturbations and Immune Function in Low Birthweight Swine
DownloadSpring 2023
Although dairy intake has been shown to have a neutral or some beneficial effect on major cardiometabolic risk factors, the impact of dairy, and especially dairy fat, on immune function remains to be investigated. To understand the effect of consuming dairy fat on cardiometabolic risk factors and...

Effect of source and concentration of supplemental trace minerals on apparent absorption and retention, performance and physiological indicators of trace mineral status in lactating Holstein dairy cows
DownloadSpring 2020
Inorganic sources of trace minerals are commonly supplemented in dairy cow diets; however, there has been an increase in the supplementation of minerals complexed with organic compounds. Organic sources of trace minerals are thought to be protected from antagonistic interactions within the...

Effects of heat-treatment of colostrum on the development of calves in the neonatal and pre-weaned periods
DownloadFall 2014
Calves are born agammaglobulinemic and must ingest vital immunoglobulins via colostrum for protection from infection during the neonatal period. Colostrum also contains many other biologically active factors, such as growth factors, immune cells and antimicrobial peptides, which are important for...

Evaluation of a pedometer system for prediction of estrus and parturition in dairy cows housed in a tie-stall barn
DownloadFall 2011
Physiological changes associated with estrus and parturition in dairy cows are manifested by changes in activity and behaviour. Accurate and timely detection of cows in estrus and those approaching parturition is very important. The research objective was to determine the efficiency of the...
-
Fall 2023
The calving transition is a challenging period for dairy cows characterized by negative energy balance, metabolic dysfunction, and inflammation, each of which may compromise milk production. Despite extensive research in this area, much is still unknown on how to best manage this period. The...
-
Fall 2013
This thesis research was aimed to develop a residual feed intake (RFI) prediction equation in dairy cattle while accounting for the animals’ multifunctional lactation non-linear energy requirements profiles. The possibility of shortening RFI test period and finding indicator traits for RFI...

Technology Adoption by Ontario Dairy Producers: Productivity-enhancing versus Cost-minimizing Technologies
DownloadFall 2015
Under supply management, Canadian dairy producers maximize profits subject to their quota holdings. This constraint on supply effectively leads producers to solve a cost-minimization problem, which may have an effect on their use of technology. I hypothesize that Ontario dairy producers have...
