This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Chemical, Enzymatic and Chemo-enzymatic Synthesis of Complex Oligosaccharides as Probes of Glycan Functions
DownloadSpring 2016
Carbohydrates, an essential class of biomolecules, mediate a variety of biological processes. Recent advances in chemical, enzymatic and chemo-enzymatic synthesis have facilitated access to an increasing number of structurally well-defined oligosaccharides. These molecules are serving as...

Exploration of specific carbohydrate epitopes in their native habitat with the Staudinger ligation
DownloadFall 2011
Glycans modulate biological processes and play a vital role in the function of receptors. However, the structure and functions of glycans are often obscured due to the heterogeneity of these structures. We hypothesize that the function of a specific carbohydrate epitope can be elucidated by...

Studies Towards Understanding the Biosynthesis of Methyl Phosphoramidates found in Campylobacter jejuni
DownloadFall 2016
The human pathogen Campylobacter jejuni is the leading cause of food-borne gastroenteritis, causing more foodborne illnesses than Salmonella, Shigella, and Listeria combined. Of the approximate 5.3 million people infected every year in North America alone, approximately 1/1000 will develop the...

The Design, Synthesis and Evaluation of Multivalent Heterobifunctional Ligands Specific for Shiga Toxin 1 and Shiga Toxin 2
DownloadSpring 2014
Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) is a potential life-threatening condition caused by infection with Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli O157:H7. There are two major types of Shiga toxins, namely, Shiga toxin 1 (Stx1) and Shiga toxin 2 (Stx2), of which, Stx2 is clinically most closely associated...
