This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Mechanisms of Neonatal Intestinal Failure-Associated Liver Disease: Exploring the Gut-Liver Axis
DownloadSpring 2018
Neonates with intestinal failure (IF), who must rely on parenteral nutrition (PN) for growth and maintenance of health, are at risk for intestinal failure-associated liver disease (IFALD). In neonates, short bowel syndrome (SBS) as a result of intestinal resection is the most common cause of IF....

Membrane Type 1 Matrix Metalloproteinase Cleaves Low Density Lipoprotein Receptor to Regulate Lipid Metabolism
DownloadFall 2022
Low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) mediates clearance of plasma LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) and protects against the development of atherosclerosis. Our previous studies demonstrated that membrane type-1 matrix metalloproteinase (MT1-MMP/MMP14) cleaves LDL receptor (LDLR) and exacerbates the...

Membrane Type 1-Matrix Metalloproteinase Mediates Degradation of the Low-density Lipoprotein Receptor Family Members
DownloadSpring 2024
The low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) family includes 13 transmembrane protein members sharing a conserved structure and common repeats. Their importance has been shown in a variety of physiological and pathophysiological events including lipid metabolism, nervous system development and...

Motivation and Readiness in Managing Adolescent Obesity: Treatment Fidelity, Lived Experiences, and Readiness to Change Ruler
DownloadFall 2024
Background. One in three Canadian children and adolescents are living with obesity, so evidence-based, effective interventions for managing adolescent obesity are critically important. Motivation (i.e., desire and drive for change) and readiness to change (i.e., capability for change) are...

Spring 2020
Stress induced by pain and anxiety is common in pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) patients and can impede the delivery of critical care to children as well as their recovery. Sedation and analgesia in PICU is usually achieved through the use of various analgesics and sedatives, often narcotics...

Fall 2023
Heart failure is a condition whereby the weakened cardiac muscle can no longer pump blood to the rest of the body, resulting in decreased quality of life. Despite the severity of this debilitating condition, there is no cure for heart failure. Modulation of cardiac energy metabolism has become an...

Spring 2012
The surgical repair of congenital heart defects (CHDs) often requires a bloodless/motionless field achieved by arresting the neonatal heart and exposing it to a period of ischemia. Metabolic manipulation, such as suppression of fatty acid (FA) oxidation, improves post-ischemic functional recovery...

Spring 2016
Cerebral Palsy (CP) constitutes the primary outcome of premature nerve injury. Impairment of oxygen and glucose supply during pregnancy to the fetus can induce neuron damage and death. Mental retardation, seizures, learning disabilities, and other mental diseases can occur as a result of this...

Next StepTM Resuscitator as a Novel Device for Providing Volume-Targeted Ventilation in the Delivery Room
DownloadFall 2024
Approximately 13-26 million newborns worldwide require breathing assistance at birth. Positive pressure ventilation (PPV) is the cornerstone of neonatal resuscitation. The purpose of PPV is to help the newborn develop a functional residual capacity by delivering an adequate tidal volume (VT)....

Nonmedical Use of Opioids Following Short Term Therapeutic Exposure in Children and Youth: A Systematic Review and Qualitative Study of Decision Maker Information Needs
DownloadFall 2021
Introduction Healthcare visits, hospitalizations, and deaths due to opioid-related harms continue to rise for children, despite an overall decline in opioid prescriptions. Decision-makers (including patients, families, clinicians, and policy-makers) require high quality syntheses to inform...
