This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.

This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). Heart Failure Related Outcomes in Patients within a Specialized Clinic-Based Cohort and a Population Level Cohort: Emphasis on Diabetes
DownloadFall 2024
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a well-established risk factor for adverse prognosis in patients with heart failure (HF). Outcomes in this patient population have not been thoroughly investigated in specialized heart function clinics (HFC). Recently, sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors...

Human Pegivirus Infection of the Central Nervous System: Neural Cell Tropism and Neuroimmune Responses
DownloadFall 2020
Human pegivirus (HPgV) is a positive sense, single-stranded RNA virus of the Flaviviridae family that is best characterized in the context of peripheral lymphocyte infection. Our group recently reported HPgV infection in the central nervous system (CNS) of two patients with fatal...

Immune activation in patients with admission blood pressure above 185/110 mm Hg in acute ischemic stroke
DownloadFall 2021
Background: An admission blood pressure over 185/110 mm Hg is associated with increased risk of recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (r-tPA)-related hemorrhagic transformation (HT). Stroke guidelines recommend blood pressure (BP) above 185/110 mm Hg be lowered before r-tPA treatment. How high...

Impact of changes in proximal tubular reabsorption on kidney function and on blood flow synchronization among nephrons
DownloadSpring 2023
Kidneys stabilize renal blood flow (RBF) in response to fluctuations in blood pressure by employing two mechanisms, the myogenic response (MR) and the tubuloglomerular feedback (TGF) mechanism. The TGF mechanism stabilizes macula densa solute delivery via controlling afferent arteriolar diameter....
