This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Performance Monitoring of Iterative Learning Control and Development of Generalized Predictive Control for Batch Processes
DownloadSpring 2012
Unlike continuous processes, a batch process has a certain period of operation time, and there are a number of batches in a typical operation. Hence variables in a batch process have dynamics in two dimensions, along time and across batches. Besides, batch processes involve large transient phases...

Fall 2019
Asphaltenes, defined as a solubility class, are soluble in toluene and insoluble in paraffinic solvents such as š¶5 and š¶7. Asphaltenes have high heteroatom and a low H/C ratio compared to bitumenās other fractions. Moreover, they have a complex structure, high molecular weight, and high melting...

Petroleum Diesel-Assisted Ambient Temperature Aqueous-Nonaqueous Hybrid Bitumen Extraction Process
DownloadFall 2017
Solvents are used in the oil sands industry to reduce the viscosity of bitumen and hence to assist recovery of bitumen prior to its upgrading. Solvents can also be added to the ores to reduce energy consumption during the aqueous-nonaqueous hybrid bitumen extraction process at ambient conditions....

pH-Indicating Colorimetric Hydrogel for Wound Dressing and Medical Grade Silicone Adhesive for Skin Electronics: Towards Multifunctional Bionic Skin Patch
DownloadFall 2016
The physiological milieu of the normal skin is slightly acidic with a pH value ranged between 4 and 6; for chronic or infected wounds with a higher bacterial load, its pH value is above 7.3. Motivated by the fact that monitoring the pH value is an effective way to monitor the status of the wound,...

Fall 2019
Oral delivery is the most attractive drug administration route due to many specific advantages. Ease of administration, large and diverse absorption surface area, applicability for solid formulations, patientsā compliance, and intensified immune response due to mucosal effects are usually...

Phase Behavior and Thermophysical Properties of Athabasca Bitumen and Athabasca Bitumen + Toluene Mixtures in Near-critical Water
DownloadSpring 2014
The phase behavior and thermophysical properties of heavy hydrocarbons + water at elevated temperatures underpins development and implementation of coordinated production and refining processes, where for example, bitumen is produced by a SAGD method (steam assisted gravity drainage) and the...
-
Fall 2015
Oil sands bitumen is increasingly recovered by injecting steam into reservoirs using the energy intensive Steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) process. Interest in improving recovery and energy efficiencies have led to an interest in injecting light hydrocarbons along with or instead of steam...

Phase Behavior Modeling of Asymmetric n-Alkane + Aromatic and Naphthenic Hydrocarbon Mixtures
DownloadSpring 2016
Global phase behavior calculations based on 150 n-alkane + aromatic and n-alkane + naphthenic hydrocarbon binary mixtures were performed. These calculations were compared with experimental measurements whenever possible, and additional measurements were made as part of this work. The widely used...

Fall 2012
Unwanted phase separation of asphaltenes poses significant challenges in production and processing of heavy oils and bitumen. The analysis and prediction of asphaltene precipitation behaviors and asphaltene-diluent interactions are typically treated either from a solution thermodynamics or a...
