This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Meiosis in eukaryotes includes a developmentally programmed pre-meiotic G2 phase arrest before the onset of MI division mediated by inhibitory phosphorylation of Cdk1. There are two inhibitory kinases, Wee1 and Myt1. Myt1 mediated Cyclin B-Cdk1 regulation serves as a conserved mechanism for...

Ducks are the natural reservoir of influenza A virus. Normally, the virus replicates in their intestine and is passed in the feces, although highly pathogenic influenza A virus replicates in the lungs. Influenza infection in ducks is frequently asymptomatic. During infection with highly...

Investigation of the Genetic Etiology of Superior Coloboma and the Formation and Closure of Superior Ocular Sulcus
DownloadSpring 2022
Congenital ocular coloboma is a rare genetic disorder that is typically observed as a cleft in the inferior aspect of the eye due to failed choroid fissure closure during embryogenesis. Together with microphthalmia (small eyes) and anophthalmia (absence of eyes), it represents 3-11% of childhood...

Investigation of transcriptional and translational regulation of the Neurospora crassa alternative oxidase

Mitochondria are organelles found in most eukaryotes and supply the cell with the majority of its energy needs in the form of ATP. Most of the proteins needed for mitochondrial function are nuclear encoded. Therefore, mitochondria communicate their functional status to the nucleus, resulting in...

Fall 2015
The molecular identity of the Na+ uptake mechanism across the gills of freshwater fish has been the subject of lively debate for decades. Despite the extensive evidence for NHE mediated Na+ uptake, thermodynamic constraints on the function of NHEs at low ion concentrations and low environmental...

Involvement of PI3K-Dependent Signal Transduction During the Integrated Control of Basal and Ligand-Biased Pituitary Cell Functions
DownloadFall 2015
Within multicellular organisms, individual cells must communicate with one another in order to coordinate physiological functions. One of the ways this is achieved is through the production and release of chemical messengers, called hormones. Hormones alter the functions of their target cells by...

Multiple carnivore species can have greater population limiting effects than single carnivores. Two coexisting carnivores can only be similar up to a certain extent. I investigate how two carnivores, wolves (Canis lupus) and cougars (Puma concolor), coexist through niche partitioning in the...

Living jawed vertebrates can be readily assigned to two major well-supported clades: the cartilaginous Chondrichthyes (sharks and their kin) and the ‘bony fishes’, the Osteichthyes (which include tetrapods, and to which humans belong). Together, these make up the crown group Gnathostomata....
