This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Investigating the Nuclear Roles of Iron Regulatory Protein-1A (IRP1A) in Drosophila melanogaster
DownloadFall 2023
Iron is an indispensable micronutrient for almost all organisms. Either the lack or excess of iron can result in various human diseases. Therefore, to maintain cellular iron homeostasis, the IRP/IRE (iron regulatory protein/iron responsive element) system tightly regulates iron concentrations....

Vertebrate eye development is a dynamic process that couples morphogenesis, migration of extraocular periocular mesenchyme (POM) cells to the eye, and retinal patterning along the nasotemporal and dorsoventral (DV) axes. Aberrant patterning during ocular development often results in defects...

Ocular coloboma is a congenital disorder that presents as an ocular malformation in the inferior aspect of the eye and may result in blindness. Recently, our lab characterized a novel disorder, superior coloboma, which presents as a coloboma affecting the superior portion of the eye. We...

Investigating the role of Stromalin and its potential downstream targets on seizure behaviour in Drosophila
DownloadFall 2024
The cohesin complex is a highly conserved structure that plays an important role in sister chromatid cohesion, segregating chromosomes during cell division, gene regulation, and repairing double stranded DNA breaks. The cohesin complex is comprised of four core subunits: Stromalin (STAG1/2),...

Fall 2022
The ppk20 (pickpocket 20) gene was identified from a two-step screen that was aimed at identifying genes relevant to Drosophila iron and heme homeostasis. Initially, our lab collaborated with two other labs and carried out a prothoracic gland (PG)-specific genome-wide screen of 12,500 RNA...

Investigating the roles of O-linked Protein Glycosylation and Type Two Secretion in the Pathogenesis of Acinetobacter
DownloadSpring 2017
The Acinetobacter baumannii, A. nosocomialis and A. pittii are Gram-negative opportunistic human pathogens that are of importance to the healthcare system particularily because of their resistance to antibiotics. The thesis below focuses on investigating two virulence attributes of Acinetobacter...

Investigating the value of incorporating behavioural measures in a discriminant function developed for sex assignment in black-capped chickadees (Poecile atricapillus)
DownloadFall 2021
Black-capped chickadees (Poecile atricapillus) are a sexually monomorphic species that typically require molecular assays or observation of sex-specific behaviours in the breeding season for accurate sex assignment. We developed a discriminant function in a central Albertan chickadee population...

Fall 2019
Cilia are microtubule-based structures that project from nearly every cell in the vertebrate body. While cilia in different contexts can have either sensory or motile functions, all cilia rely upon a core set of genes. When these genes are mutated either singly or in various combinations, a...

Investigation into the Cytotoxicity of Soluble Extracellular Products Secreted by Tenacibaculum maritimum and other Tenacibaculum species
DownloadFall 2024
Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) aquaculture in British Columbia (BC), Canada is the province’s largest agricultural export and is a significant contributor to its economy. As with any food production industry, aquaculture faces challenges regarding disease. One disease of interest is...
