Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Degradation of Recalcitrant Organics in Oil Sands Process Water (OSPW) Using Combined Electro-Oxidation and Electrochemically Activated Peroxymonosulfate (EO-PMS)
DownloadFall 2021
Abdelrahman, Ali Satti Abdellatif
In northern Alberta, the bitumen extraction process from oil sands ores consumes large amounts of water, resulting in the generation of huge volumes of oil sand process water (OSPW). Currently, the treatment of OSPW is considered a major challenge facing the oil sands industry. Moreover, among...

Design, Simulation and Evaluation of Effective Industrial Information Systems: Case of Machine Condition Monitoring and Maintenance Management Information Systems
DownloadFall 2013
Industrial information systems can improve the management of industrial operations by providing relevant and timely information on the status of physical assets via condition and process monitoring systems, and by enabling the effective use of data by systems and processes that restore proper...

Development Of Shrub And Lichen-Dominated Biocrust Propagation And Establishment Techniques For Reclamation In Northern Environments
DownloadSpring 2022
Resource exploration and extraction in the arctic causes long lasting disturbances as natural recovery is a long and slow process in the north. With three Canadian diamond mines expected to close in the next fifteen years, many hectares of land will require revegetating. Research conducted in the...

Spring 2021
Different quantities of information are available at various stages of the development of a mining project. Consequential decisions are made given the data available at the time. Geological uncertainty due to sparse data presents economic risks. The collection of additional information reduces...

Effects of Cyclical Load Conditions on Wear Rate and Wear Scar in a Modified ASTM G65 Abrasion Test
DownloadSpring 2016
Wear is an incredibly complicated phenomenon that can occur in many different forms, through a number of modes, facilitated by a variety of mechanisms. Surface mining operations are particularly afflicted by abrasive wear; principally during the excavation process. Shovel geometry has been...
-
Fall 2014
The oil sands landscape in northern Alberta is interspersed with large tailings ponds that hold wastewater from bitumen mining and extraction processes. Recent monitoring results indicate that annually many thousands of birds, mostly migrating waterfowl, land on the ponds associated with this...

Electric Rope Shovel Operation Enhancements, Understanding and Modelling the Impact of The Operator
DownloadSpring 2021
The loading and haulage system is considered a prominent part of a surface mine operation. Improving the system enhances the productivity and economics of an operation to a great extent. Operators play a critical role in the mine overall performance and production. Autonomous truck fleets have...

Fall 2016
Chrome carbide samples prepared using submerged arc welding procedures were subjected to physical abrasion testing in a modified machine similar to the ASTM G65 standard, in an investigation of media particle shape contribution to abrasive wear. The primary intent of this study was to determine...

Spring 2014
Anthropogenic contaminants can impair olfactory responses to natural odorants. In fishes, these impairments may be used as a metric of sub-lethal toxicity. My studies aimed to determine the effects of two contaminant sources on fish olfaction as measured by electro-olfactography (EOG). The...

Genotoxicity and Mutagenicity of Extractable Organics from Oil Sands Process-Affected Water
DownloadFall 2015
Oil sands process-affected water (OSPW) is produced in the surface mining industry during the hot-water extraction of bitumen from oil-sands ore. Its acid extractable organic (AEO) fraction is known to be acutely toxic, but few studies have addressed its genotoxicity or mutagenicity. Here, the in...
