White spruce, with its many needles and overlapping and interlaced branches holds snow on its surface. Spruce trees can be so heavily covered with snow that they can look white. The conical shape and flexibility of the branches help the snow slide off when it melts.

The Santa Claus Forest near Rovaniemi, Finland is a large tract of land with trails criss-crossing through it. Traffic signs such as this one alert snow machine drivers to intersections of trails.

In the yard at the British Antarctic Survey, supplies for expeditions are packed into shipping containers and shipped to the expedition departure point. In this image, tracked snow machines are stored on the top of the shipping containers.

Sointula or "place of harmony" was a Finnish utopian community established in 1901 on Malcolm Island, near the northeast coast of Vancouver Island. These two halls provided the community a with a place to meet, exercise and to perform theatrical and musical works.
